City Councils of Angola

Some sources replace Camulemba and Capenda city councils, in Lunda Norte province, with a single council called Capenda Camulemba (with or without a hyphen).

An article dated 2005-02-22 announced the decision to create the tenth município in Luanda province, which would be named Belas.

Angola is divided into provinces, which are subdivided into 163 municípios (usually translated "city councils"). The table below shows all of the city councils of Angola. Change history:

  1. 1975: The following city councils changed their names, according to the Portuguese Genealogist Master List . In Benguela province, Mariano Machado changed to Ganda. In Bié province, General Machado changed to Camacupa; Neves Ferreira changed to Cuemba; Silva Porto changed to Kuito. In Cuando Cubango province, Serpa Pinto changed to Menongue. In Cuanza Norte province, Camabatela changed to Ambaca; name of Quilombo dos Dembos changed to Gonguembo. In Cuanza Sul province, Vila Nova de Seles changed to Seles; Novo Redondo changed to Sumbe; Santa Comba changed to Waku Kungo. In Cunene province, Santa Clara changed to Ombadja. In Huambo province, Teixeira da Silva changed to Bailundo; Vila Robert Williams changed to Caála; Nova Lisboa changed to Huambo; Londuimbale changed to Lounduimbali; Tchicala-Tcholoanga changed to Tchikala-Tcholoanga. In Huila province, João de Almeida changed to Chibia. In Lunda Norte province, Dundo changed to Chitato. In Lunda Sul province, Nova Chaves changed to Muconda; Henrique de Carvalho changed to Saurimo. In Malange province, Duque de Bragança changed to Calandula; Nova Gaia changed to Cambundi-Catembo; Malange changed to Malanje. In Moxico province, Forte Cameias changed to Cameias; Teixeira de Sousa changed to Luau; Luchases changed to Luchazes. In Namibe province, Vila Arriaga changed to Bibala; Moçâmedes changed to Namibe; Porto Alexandre changed to Tombua. In Uíge province, Carmona changed to Uíge. In Zaire province, São Salvador do Congo changed to M'banza Congo; Ambrizete changed to N'zeto; Santo António do Zaire changed to Soyo.
  2. ~1995: The earlier version of this page showed Luanda city council (HASC code AO.LU.LU) in place of Ingombota, Maianga, Samba, Sambizanga, and Viana. My hypothesis is that Luanda city council was split into the five city councils mentioned. I have also tentatively concluded that Bula Atumba (AO.CN.BA) and Pango Aluquém (AO.CN.PA) city councils were moved from Cuanza Norte province to Bengo.

Other names of subdivisions:

  1. Benguela: Benguella (obsolete)
  2. Longonjo: Longongo (variant)
  3. Malanje: Malange (variant)
  4. M'Banza Congo: M'Banza Kongo (variant)
